RP3-Logo_colorThe Morristown Power System (MPS) receives all its power at 161-kV from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)  through three delivery points and operates its own 69-kV sub-transmission system serving ten distribution substations in a redundant scheme.  All together, MPS operates and maintains 39 miles of transmission lines, 300 miles of distribution lines, and thirty-five 13.8 kV distribution feeders which serve nearly 14,500 customers in the city of Morristown, TN.  The system load peak of 170 MW occurred in February 2015.

The City of Morristown has three industrial parks, the most recent near Interstate I-81.  Industrial/Commercial loads account or over 75% of energy sold.  Load growth over the past 14 years has averaged 4.2%, but slowed to 0.8% the past 5 years.

All distribution feeders are protected by state-of-the-art digital relays, providing the optimum in feeder coordination.  MPS also has over thirty 3-phase reclosers on distribution circuits to isolate faults and provide increased reliability to industrial customers.  MPS actively tracks outages and cause to monitor electric quality and reliability. MPS is committed to a Maintenance Program that is cost effective and ensures high reliability to all customers.

MPS monitors electrical system performance using a SCADA system at our Power Operations Center where dispatchers have real-time information of feeder loading and device status.  This system allows for remote operation of equipment, alarm history and valuable performance information.   Smart metering has been installed on all services and gives us the ability to see real-time data of each customer and evaluate the extent of each outage.  This data is fed into our Outage Management System (OMS) and displayed for the dispatchers.  

Since 2005, MPS has been nationally recognized among its peers with a RP3 Platinum Certification as a Reliable Public Power Provider .

CO2 Emission Rate

Morristown Utility Systems CY2021 as-delivered CO2 emission rate average for our customers whose demand (kW) is less than 5 MW is 649.56 CO2 lbs/MWh. The CO2 rates disclosed reflect TVA's CY2021 renewable energy credit adjustment, which resulted in a reduction of 4.32 percent in its as-delivered CO2 lbs/MWh rate.  Consistent with generally accepted voluntary carbon accounting standards and in response to customer requests, actual CO2 emissions have been annually allocated to customers in the same manner as costs.  For our customers in the MSB rate class, please contact us for your emission allocations.  

Being a TVA-served local power company, MUS' CY2021 CO2 lbs/MWh rate includes TVA emissions and generation from owned and purchased power.  TVA does not create or transfer RECs from any of its hydroelectric sources. Therefore, consistent with CDP guidance, any hydroelectric energy percentage disclosed by TVA in this disclosure letter can also be reported as renewable to CDP. This as-delivered aggregated generation was comprised of a power composition by source of: 

  • 27.312% natural gas,
  • 16.962% coal,
  • 0.003% diesel,
  • 11.297% hydroelectric,
  • 40.433% nuclear,
  • 2.234% renewables (1.826% wind and 0.238% solar and 0.170% biomass) and 
  • 1.760% null power (the remainder includes REC-encumbered renewable sources that have not yet been retired to the generation mix or sold).
